Gameloft brings chess and backgammon to iPhone

The big thing about iPhone is no publisher is quite sure what kind of people will be buying games for it. Will it be hardcore gamers looking for driving games and first-person shooters, or more casual gamers looking for a quick fix?

Gameloft is placing its bets on the latter – at least with its launch titles for the App Store. Take Chess & Backgammon Classics for example, which offers a choice of... well, you can guess from the title.

Both use the iPhone's features in their gameplay. In chess, you move pieces by dragging and dropping them with the touchscreen, choosing between 2D and 3D views of the board. Meanwhile, for backgammon you shake the iPhone to roll the dice.

There's a choice of difficulty levels, promised "human-like artificial intelligence", and a big choice of themes to keep the games looking fresh. Meanwhile, there are three modes: Instant Play, Quiz and Classic Games.

Chess & Backgammon Classics is available now from the App Store for £5.99. Click here to go straight to its product page.
