Fans of constructing fields and towns from nothing, only to see their opponent steal all the points by placing a follower down and claiming it as their own, will be overjoyed to hear that classic German board game Carcassonne is set for an official release on the App Store.

Winner of countless board game awards over the years, Carcassonne is a tile-based game in which up to five players build a town that sort of resembles the famous fortified French town of the same name.

From there they claim the various fields, fortifications, roads and abbeys and attempt to screw over their opponents by either fencing them in a worthless field or refusing to place tiles that complete a construction.

Touch to play

The iPhone version is being developed with the support of Hans im Glück Verlags, the original German publishers of the board game, and comes with a wealth of AI opponents as well as the ability to play via wi-fi, Bluetooth, or on one device.

Expansion packs are promised as in-app purchases further down the line and the game will be released with both English and German localisations.

You can find out more from the official developer blog.

The app will initially cost £2.99/$4.99/€3.99 for a limited time before rising to its standard price of £5.99/$9.99/€7.99 once the app becomes universal for both the iPhone and iPad

It should be available in a few weeks time.
