Seeing as the mere mention of cake makes our heart rate double and saliva glands react like an over-active bulldog's, it's no wonder Cake Mania has been downloaded by 35 million people since it was released as a free PC game back in 2006.

Its subsequent release on DS did pretty well too, selling over 280,000 copies, even though we didn't think it was well suited to the DS.

Now however Majesco has announced it will be publishing the sequel that's currently in development at Sandlot Games, the makers (or bakers) of the original.

Cake Mania 2 sees the return of Jill as she runs her various bakeries and tries to keep the customer satisfied. The gameplay will remain much the same, so you'll have an ever-increasing queue of customers to serve and all-manner of cakes to custom ice and decorate for them. This time, Majesco promises it will pack in far more content though.

For instance, you be able to buy new machines and implements for your kitchen using bakery earnings - there are 50 items in total. The more-demanding customer base will include aliens, federal agents, rock stars and grannies. And the whole experience will be far less linear, with over 200 branching levels and six alternative endings.

The icing on the ahem... cake will be 10 cake styles, new decorations and frosting flavours and eight 'wild cake toppers' (we're presuming Nigella Lawson-types might be able to process this information - we like eating cakes not baking them). Exotic locations for your bakeries, such as an underwater theme park and outer space, will be available too.

Which makes Cake Mania 2 sound like a promising mixture, always assuming basic issues such as the graphics and menu icons are more accessible this time around.

A release date hasn't been mentioned by Majesco, nor Eidos, who we expect to pick up the European rights. Unfortunately there are no screenshots yet either, so you'll have to make do with a reminder of what the original game looked like.
