Broken Sword 5 gets funded on Kickstarter - Revolution will make Beneath a Steel Sky 2 if it makes $1 million

More than 8,000 people over 13 days have helped Broken Sword - The Serpent's Curse reach its modest Kickstarter goal of $400,000.

Charles Cecil and developer Revolution Software are using the crowdfunding site to cobble together the money to make a fifth Broken Sword adventure on iOS and Android (and PC, Mac, and Linux).

"The whole team is dancing around the room in celebration," the team wrote in an update to Kickstarter backers. "We are so excited. For the first time ever, we have full creative control of a Broken Sword game, and it's all down to you."

New rewards

In the weeks since its Kickstarter campaign went live, Revolution has revealed that anyone who pledges $25 or more will receive the Android version for free. The iOS version, however, will not be given out to backers.

"Unfortunately we still have not been able to find a way to gift the iOS version to our backers, though we are talking to Apple about how this can be done," the developer said in a Kickstarter update.

Other backer rewards include digital comics, previous Revolution games on PC, T-shirts, signed goodies, and an invitation to the launch and wrap parties.

Stretch goals

Revolution has also announced a number of stretch goals - things the team plans to do if it receives a boatload more money than it asked for.

At $500k, Revolution will restore the "characters, puzzles, Easter eggs, art, and dialogue" that ended up on the cutting room floor. These will add hours to the game.

If it reaches $650k, the developer will introduce exotic locations in Africa and the Middle East. If the Revolution team raises double its Kickstarter goal and rakes in $800k, the studio will be in a position to realise its "wildest dreams" for the game, and introduce more characters, locations, and puzzles.

With a million dollars in its coffers, the York-based studio will immediately green-light a sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky.

The Broken Sword Kickstarter still has 16 days to go. At the time of writing, the game has 8,602 backers, who have pledged $421,969 to the project.
