Nokia has announced that a revamped version of Bounce Boing Voyage will be the first N-Gage game to support accelerometer-based controls.

Due for re-release this Spring, the new version will let players move and jump by tilting and lifting their handsets. People who've already bought the game will get a free upgrade.

Initially, it'll work on a range of N-Gage handsets: the N79, N82, N85, N95 and N95 8GB, N96 and 6210 Navigator.

However, in its blog post announcing the news, Nokia says that "most devices coming later this year will feature motion control support". The game will still be playable via keypad on phones without accelerometers inside.

Bounce Boing Voyage is a sensible game to start with - tilting to roll a ball around has become a well-established game mechanic thanks to Wii and iPhone.

The latter is most relevant to Nokia's move: Apple's handset has popularised motion-controlled mobile games, leaving N-Gage - which launched with a focus on 3D and connectivity - to catch up on that score.
