Breakout clones strike back

iPhone Block Breaker Deluxe 2 smashes into App Store

Atari made a legal effort to clear the path for the release of its iPhone conversion of Super Breakout recently, and several of the game's clones were asked to leave the App Store, cap in hand. But it seems Gameloft isn't so easily swayed, as it just released an iPhone port of the hit mobile sequel, Block Breaker Deluxe 2, onto the App Store.

And this is genuine competition for Super Breakout, since Block Breaker Deluxe 2 offers some pretty superb features. The touchscreen is used to control the paddle, obviously, but the accelerometer can also be used to shuffle the bricks – tilting the device to tip and roll them around the screen.

You can buy the game, which costs just £2.99, by clicking 'Buy It!' below.

It's possible, of course, that Block Breaker Deluxe 2 was made under licence, which means Atari would be hard pressed to elbow this Breakout clone out of the way, but Gameloft evidently doesn't fear the competition, as a remark on the game's App Store page suggests:

"More modes, levels, power-ups, challenges, bosses, and surprises than any game of the genre!"

Fight, fight, fight!

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
