A couple of weeks ago, Spanner got his hands on Battle Blasters, an interesting topdown one-on-one shooter from new iPhone studio Little Guy Games, which has just been released onto the App Store.

As he pointed out, it takes a seldom seen approach which has you controlling one character who moves horizontally across the bottom of the screen firing at an opponent moving across the top of the screen.

You have various options for firing - either a fast but weak attack or a slow attack that will also destroy the fast attack energy bolt should it collide, thus providing a defensive capability.

As well as this, each character has a special attack, while they can use a shield to reflect attacks too.

It's a real paper-scissors-stone-type of gameplay, all set within a futuristic steampunk plot that has you unlocking six characters with different tactical skills as you go.

Indeed, there are various modes including Campaign, Quickplay or Multiplayer (this is two players on one iDevice), while you can also upload your score to Facebook.

You can see how it works in the following video.
