Although Google canceled its Android press event due to hazardous weather caused by Hurricane Sandy, it hasn't been sitting quietly waiting for the storm to blow over.

Instead, Google announced an upgrade to the Nexus 7's storage capacity and also unveiled the Nexus 10 tablet.

Google may finally have a solid iPad challenger on its hands thanks to the Nexus 10's robust resolution. At 2560 x 1600 with 300 pixels per inch, the Nexus 10's 10.055-inch screen makes it "the highest resolution tablet on the planet".

By contrast, the iPad's Retina Display is 2,048 x 1,536 with 264 pixels per inch on a slightly smaller 9.7-inch screen.

Pixel perfect

Although Google has not divulged the processor for the Nexus 10 yet, it did reveal a few other hardware and software features in its new high-end tablet.

In terms of hardware the Nexus 10 boasts a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, a micro USB and micro HDMI port, and a set of front-facing stereo speakers.

The battery life on the Nexus 10 will support 9 hours of continuous use on a single charge, and will deliver up to 500 hours of standby time.

What really sets the Nexus 10 apart from its competition, however, is found in its software. The Nexus 10 will run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, and will feature the ability to add multiple users and switch between them on the lock screen.

This new profile management will no doubt be of great use to couples looking to share a single slate or to parents looking to keep age-inappropriate games away from their children.

Google announced that the Nexus 10 will be available for purchase on Google Play starting on November 13. The 16 GB model costs $399, while the 32 GB version will retail for $499.
