The PlayStation Vita’s fortunes continued to improve in Japan with strong hardware and software sales across the board.

As we predicted last week, the release of Atlus' RPG Persona 4 The Golden lead to a strong surge in Vita hardware sales. For the week of June 11th – 17th, PS Vita sold 34,459 units in Japan, up over 157 per cent from last week’s total of 13,383.

Andriasang reports that Persona 4 The Golden sold 137,076 copies, which was enough to secure the top software spot for the same weekly period.

Persona 4 The Golden is expected in North America this fall. No release date has been provided for Europe as yet.

All that glitters

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS were down slightly during last week’s sales period, falling roughly 5 per cent from 64,875 units to 61,793.

The PSP similarly sagged slightly in the sales department, falling 3 per cent from 10,038 units to 9,740.

The Vita’s strong sales figures are likely to continue for the remainder of the month, with the release of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection still looming for Japanese gamers.
