3DS is always busy, even when it's asleep

Today's European 3DS press event has shed some extra light on the new Nintendo handheld's online capabilities.

The console will support two wi-fi services, called SpotPass and StreetPass.

SpotPass will function similarly to the Wii's WiiConnect24, searching for system updates, free downloads, and other software - potentially including game demos - as long as your 3DS is near a wi-fi hotspot.

StreetPass allows the handheld to communicate with other 3DS systems, alerting you if you pass another 3DS owner in the street. From there you can check out what games they've been playing, trade personalised avatars over the new Mii Plaza, and, of course, challenge them to a quick round of Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.

What's interesting (or a little bit creepy, depending on your standpoint) is that both SpotPass and StreetPass will function even when the 3DS is in sleep mode. This makes sense for automatic updates, firmware, and the like, and could make for some very interesting social gaming possibilities.

There will, however, be customisable privacy settings, allowing you to choose how much access people have to your gaming data.

So if you're embarrassed about your Animal Crossing playtime, there's no need to worry.
