Epic Games: Nintendo 3DS probably can’t handle Unreal Engine

“You couldn’t do a game that looks like Epic Citadel for iPhone on it, for example”, says Epic Games vice president Mark Rein, discussing the 3DS tech specs.

Despite not actually having the device to hand, Rein told Joystiq that Epic probably won’t be developing games for the system, because it likely lies below the minimum spec for the company’s flagship developer tools, Unreal Engine.

“I think if [Nintendo] considered that our engine would be good on it, they would have probably talked to us about it," reasons Rein.

That’s despite Unreal Engine 3’s massive flexibility, allowing it to run the gamut from Gears of War and Mass Effect to XBLA’s Shadow Complex and iPhone’s Epic Citadel tech demo.

Rein might change his mind once the developer gets its hands on the system itself.
