Apple today announced that it has sold 3 million iPads since the device's launch 80 days ago – the same amount of time it took Jules Verne's character Phileas Fogg to circumnavigate the globe.

To put that number in context, if Phileas Fogg had conducted his entire journey by balloon and the iPad's 'magical' properties were causing all 3 million units to travel in a steady flow back in time, across the boundary that separates fact from fiction, and into the basket of Fogg's balloon, he'd have to bail them over the side at a rate of 2343.75 an hour – roughly once every second and a half – throughout his waking day to stay afloat, showering the populations of dozens of countries with iPads.

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

Those who are lucky enough to own an iPad have access to 11,000 dedicated apps, along with 225,000 upscaleable iPhone and iPod touch apps.
