Less than a week after launching iPad to the world, Apple has once again taken to the stage to detail a key new iPhone feature: multitasking.

Once iPhone OS 4.0 goes live, it'll allow you to run multiple apps concurrently, allowing you to multi-task.

"Now we weren't the first to this party, but we're gonna be the best. Just like cut and paste," said Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple.

The company is dedicated to giving customers multitasking support without draining the phone's battery, making the currently running app feel sluggish, or sacrificing the accessible user interface.

Tapping the home button twice raises up a hidden dock showing the icons of currently running apps. From here you can zip between your applications, without closing them down.

Examples of multitasking include background audio, voice-over IP, background location services, local notifications, task completion, and fast app switching that enables an app to run full for quick use.

The iPhone 4.0 operating system will be released this summer. Developers will get a preview build today.
