SplatterBugs, Drift augmented reality iPhone games hit the App Store

Augmented reality games, which overlay artificial visuals onto real-life backdrops, are rapidly becoming the next big thing in gaming, and New Zealand developer HIT Labs (which publishes under the more cuddly name of Slapdown Games) has just brought two new entries to the genre.

SplatterBugs is all about splattering bugs. It involves you printing out a ‘game card’, placing it on whatever surface you want to see bugs skittering out of, taking a picture, and then tapping the bugs with your finger to squash them as they scamper over a photo of your friend, or a cake, or the floor, or whatever.

According to the App Store description, there are also bonuses for trick squashes. I don’t know what a trick squash is. Here’s a video.

In Drift, you use the ‘game card in the same way - to provide a focal point for the game action to occur around.

When you set this one down and snap it, a set of barrels appears and you need to manoeuvre an astonishingly awkward car through them by tapping on various points around the screen.

The angle at which you photograph the card determines how difficult the course is. Here’s a video.
