Laserdisc classic Dragon's Lair hacking and slashing its way onto iPhone
Dirk the Daring and dragons doing digital distribution
Laserdisc games weren't the most playable coin-ops in the arcades, but they were the best looking. That's why we have such a soft spot for them still, with Space Ace already a firm App Store favourite, and the iPhone world chomping at the bit for a god on Cobra Command.
And since those two pre-animated Discovision* classics are proving so popular for all you old iPhone gamers out there, it only makes sense that Digital Leisure would adapt the original for Apple's handheld platform too.
The game follows Dirk the Daring's quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the wizard's castle, protected by the evil dragon Singe. The arcade game required you to make joystick and button gestures at just the right moment during animated movie clips in order to progress.
The original Dragon's Lair laserdisk footage has been remastered (several times, in fact) to a standard fit for a recent Blu-ray release, so it should still look pretty splendid on iPhone. It's a game that's seen plenty of re-releases, and is expected on DSi pretty soon, so the developer has had plenty of practice.
More Dragon's Lair news as it breaks out of the dungeon.
*The original, far cooler, name that laserdiscs were marketed under in the Seventies.
