WWDC 2009: iPhone 3.0 software to go live June 17th

The iPhone’s 3.0 software has been almost as big news as the new iPhone model (which we’ll have more to talk about soon, we expect) and speaking at the WWDC ’09, Phil Schiller just announced a date for the new software to begin rolling out.

The new software will boast a lot of hot new features, as well as plugging a couple of gaps that have been narking iPhone users since launch.

We’ll have cut, copy, paste and undo in email, notes, messages and so forth, and MMS has been added depending on carrier support. Interestingly enough, Apple also took the opportunity to announce that a seamless PC tethering will also be included via USB and Bluetooth, without the need to run any apps. The carriers won’t like this one, but it’s nice to know it’ll be in there, and apparently O2 will be supporting this from day one (though AT&T won’t).

Searching will reach throughout the iPhone and internet, and even within applications and iTunes, making it easier to get to the info you need, while streaming of movies, TV shows and audio will be added along with a boost to general HTTP performance. And if you like to watch on your iPhone, you’ll be pleased to hear that iTunes will allow for rentals on the iPhone, and a few parental controls have been built in to help out with certification.

Should you lose your expensive, and newly updated iPhone, Apple showed WWDC attendees how MobileMe users will be able to track it down at anytime on a browser-based map, and allow you to send an alert to your phone with a number for the finder to call. For the security conscious, you’ll also be able to wipe your iPhone remotely, then restore it through iTunes should you get it back.

Along with loads of other developer SPI’s, Apple rounded off its extensive 3.0 demonstration with a release date of June 17th. It's free for all iPhone users (both original iPhone and 3G) but will cost $9.95 for iPod touch (1st or 2nd generation). We’ll see you on the edge of our seat, and those devs had take a few extra minutes make sure their apps are compatible.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
