This is the sort of announcement that's making us think E3 could be very exciting when it comes to laying out the next couple of months of DSiWare gaming.

Not that Creat Studios' Alien Havoc is super duper exciting in-and-of-itself, but it is the first announcement of a small developer doing something new for the download-only DSi Shop. Frankly, anything would be better than the continuing drip, drip, drop of Nintendo's A Little Bit of... series.

As for Alien Havoc, Creat describes it as "a throwback to the classic arcade game genre".

Actually, you're in control of a little alien who must pluck cows from Earth farms, load them onto his spaceship, and bring them back to his home planet. But the farmers won't let their cows go without a fight, so you'll have to deal with obstacles such as farm mazes of confusion as well as playing hide and sneak under the cover of tall grass, and throwing vegetables and rocks at the farmers.

There will be 20 levels, each delivering a mix of mazes, puzzles and action, an unlockable mini-game, and alien customisation features.

Alien Havoc is due for release via DSiWare during the summer.
