Move over Yahtzee, Charlie Brooker is coming to games with Gameswipe TV show
|

Having spent the last ten minutes bringing my colleague Spanner up to speed on the subject of Charlie Brooker, I’ve become aware that there may be some readers who don’t know who he is.

Charlie Brooker is a writer and broadcaster who made himself known to the media with his satirical website TVGoHome, which sent up television with mock Radio Times listings like ’10.30, WWIII Chef Aid: Humanitarian relief spectaluclar. Anthony-Worral-Thompson parachutes into Afghanistan for an hour and runs around a deserted canyon hurling biscuits at the hills.’

Now, Brooker works in TV. His shows Screenwipe and Newswipe artfully deconstruct television practices and conventions, all in the theatrically acerbic fashion favoured by humorists like Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw. It’s great TV, and if you haven’t watched it before you owe yourself an hour or two on YouTube.

Brooker has an abiding interest in video games - he talks about them in his shows and in his G2 column; there’s a 360 controller on his coffee table during scenes from his flat in Screenwipe; and he even used to be a video games journalist. Our own Stu Dredge is fond of telling fellow park bench drinkers that he commissioned a review from Brooker back at Official Dreamcast Magazine.

Enough biographical information? Good, then here’s the real news: Charlie Brooker is making a show about video games. It looks like it’s going to be called Gameswipe, and Brooker has been soliciting input via Twitter.

The crown for Best Ever Video Game Show is currently worn by '90s dinnertime extravaganza Gamesmaster. Not, I suspect, for very long.
