Pole Position: Remix qualifies for App Store release

Classic coin-op racing comes to the iPhone

Pole Position: Remix qualifies for App Store release

You don't have to be a retro gamer to get all overexcited about a game like Pole Position coming to the iPhone. Each new incarnation of the game (most recently seen on the iPod) has managed to retain the tarmac burning dynamism of the immortal coin-op from 1982, and judging by the screenshots this iPhone conversion is no different.

Without wanting to exaggerate, we believe there are around 500 billion variations of this dynamic within the driving game genre, but Pole Position was one of the first. It might not harbour quite the same imagination many racers tend to enjoy these days – having you driving carefully and soberly around a track instead of running down policemen, then getting extra points for doing powersliding over their dead bodies – but that's all the more reason to get back to such timeless basics.

Still under the Namco banner after all these years, Pole Position: Remix looks superb; capturing the basic, yet colourful third-person perspective of the arcade original, with a fresh coat of 3D paint to bring it in line with contemporary expectations.

Adopting the excellent accelerometer controls or offering an onscreen steering wheel, Pole Position: Remix has us just a tad excited. Retro goodness mixed with this year's hottest technology.

The game is available now for £5.99 (click 'Buy It!') and we'll have a review for you soon. Stay ahead of the pack by hitting 'Track It!' to read it the moment it's published.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
