The PSP's forthcoming firmware ver4.0 has been officially announced via the official Playstation Blog. No date beyond the rather vague 'soon' was given but a few details about what to expect were included.

Excited?

Thought not, seeing as most of the PSP's firmware updates tend to contain new functions for peripherals that very few people bother to use (camera, GPS, PS3). This one, however, seems to have some core feature changes, which while less than mind blowingly exciting, should prove useful if nothing else.

The main addition is a new Google internet search function accessible directly from the XMB. Essentially that means that you won't need to navigate to the Google search page via your bookmarks and it should all be tailored nicely to the PSP's slightly clunky browser when it loads.

The other mooted improvement is the ability to speed up and slow down video playback via the up and down buttons on the D-pad (though it seems that this may be restricted to videos stored on a Memory Stick PRO Duo as opposed to UMD films).

And that's as much as the Playstation Blog is reporting so far. Hopefully there are some more exciting improvements planned – wireless PSP Store access anyone?
