Word of a PSP keyboard has surfaced before. Third-party peripheral manufacturer Logic 3 showed off the one pictured at E3 2005 but it was subsequently dropped, following rumours of a lack of co-operation from Sony.

Now, attendees of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas are reporting Sony's currently working on a first-party keyboard for the handheld. The device hasn't been shown in the flesh and Sony can't be specific about its design or size and, according to Gamespot, it won't be released until mid-2009.

This hardly counts as being in time for users wanting something better than the console's virtual keyboard to use for instant messaging with the just announced Skype service. Or indeed for those who have been struggling with navigating the web using the software keyboard and buttons on their PSP for all this time. But it's certainly going to be a better option than dabbling with homebrew applications to get a keyboard working with their PSP, which has been the only solution to date.
