DS sales smash UK record

Stories bragging about record-breaking sales figures seem to materialise at least once a month from the various console makers and their territories, but this latest news from Nintendo, as reported by industry site MCV, does sound like a particularly impressive sales.

The DS has set a new sales record in the UK for the most consoles sold in a seven-day period. Last week's official ChartTrack data shows a whopping 191,000 units were sold, no doubt buoyed by the consumer-fest that is Christmas and the release of many top franchise games such as WWE, Need for Speed: ProStreet and Mario Party DS.

It'll be a particularly sweet moment for Nintendo because Sony previously held the record for weekly hardware sales dating back to when it sold 185,000 PSPs during the handheld's launch week in 2005.

Will it be able win back its record? Slim & Lite stands something of a chance this Christmas (and it's certainly doing well in Japan) but we doubt it, in all honestly. Still, we'll be following 2008's sales figures with interest.
