Once upon a time, the cycle of the year moved at a pace set by the planets and plants. Today, the rhythm of our lives is attached to a different drum, so after the traditional rites of the pre-Christmas sales, Boxing Day sales and New Year's Eve sales comes the delight of the New Year sales. And the government wonders how the UK population has managed to rack up £168 billion in unsecured debt.

Still, for those prepared to squirt some more lighter fluid on the fire, there are some DS bargains to be had.

Fancy at crack at X-Men: The Official Game? It's yours for a mere £7.98 from GAME. More movie tie-in fare can be found with Madagascar and Ice Age 2: The Meltdown both going for £14.98, while the satisfying (and only recently released) Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is £19.98.

Over at Play.com, the DS sale sees with Nintendo's Sudoku Master down a five to £14.99, while the hugely popular Sonic Rush is halfprice at £14.99. Personally though, we'd avoid Spider-Man: Battle For New York even at £17.99 (down from £29.99)

Amazon's sale also embraces DS, but to less effect. Nintendogs Chihuahua & Friends is down to £24.99, but we wouldn't touch Tomb Raider Legend, even for £16.97.

Alternatively, you might be better off saving your pennies and pounds, as January will be a very busy month for full-price DS releases with Children of Mana out on January 12th and Star Fox Command and Actionloop following two weeks later on January 26th.
