Top Trumps, the card game of choice for schoolboys of the 80’s and 90’s everywhere, has been thrust into the 21st century by THQ Wireless, which this week launched four mobile phone editions of the game. With Star Wars, MotoGP, Football Legends and Gumball 3000 Supercars editions on offer initially (and you can bet your Billy goat that there’ll be more to follow), a “very cool game just got cooler”.

At least that’s what James Rankin, one of the top bods at Winning Moves UK, the owners of the Top Trumps brand these days, reckons. “We’re very excited to bring a new dimension to the brand with a number of original gameplay features including an Advanced Mode”, he further explained.

This new mode complements the existing pick-the-highest-number play by pitting you against the clock, where you must win a set number of cards within a time limit of two minutes. Based on the higher/lower card game, finish before your time’s up and you can carry over the remaining seconds to the next round; you also get three lifelines, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? style, which will further help extract you from a sticky situation.

Each edition features both single-player and multi-player modes, either on a single handset or via Bluetooth, and up to four people can play at once. Top Trumps is available for Java-compatible handsets now, via all the major networks.
