Russian mobile developer Dynamic Pixels has already seen considerable success with its unusual blend of aquarium screensaver and cyberpet, AquaPhone.

The ecosystem-style game, which requires you to look after an ever-growing aquarium on your mobile, already has around 2 million players in Russian and CIS territories, and has now reached as far as South Africa thanks to a deal with local distributor Strike Media.

"We are extremely happy that these new prospects are opening up for us in the South African market," says Dynamic Pixels’s CEO Mihail Minakov. "The region's population is already inclined towards mobile services, which isn't surprising bearing in mind that South African mobile users are amongst the fifth highest users of mobile web services worldwide".

AquaPhone was an early adopter of the in-game micro-transaction model. The core game is available for free, with additional game content available for purchase during play.

“It’s a hugely compelling game with compelling graphics and animation,” says Russel Stromin of Strike Media, which has the license to distribute the game in South Africa. “There are shark and deep ocean versions as well as a coral reef version, for those who prefer a little more drama.”

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
