Ah, the slow flow of turn-based strategy. These are the sort of games that take hours to inform you that you're not quite as clever as the other guy.

And the PC-version of Aevum Obscurum is that turned up to at least 30, as the multiplayer game can scale up to a 30-strong Risk-like battle for mediaeval Europe.

Thankfully, the iPhone version is scaled down somewhat. The single player game has six scenarios available, ranging across ancient to mediaeval Europe and encompassing over fifty empires, from the Byzantine to the Sultanate of Egypt, Kingdom of Jerusalem, Celtic tribes and ancient Macedonia.

But to give developer Noble Master Games its due, it does place a warning - For strategy enthusiasts only! - on iTunes, so don’t complain if you can’t find the start menu.

Aevum Obscurum is available now for iPhone and iPod touch priced at £2.99 or $4.99. There's also a Lite version.
