AD 1066 - William the Conqueror invades your mobile

Celebrate 1000 years of Norman occupation

AD 1066 - William the Conqueror invades your mobile

On October 14th, 1066 the first battle of the Norman invasion of England took place, and to celebrate, HandyGames has released a new mobile title depicting the events of the Anglo-Saxon war, AD 1066 - William the Conqueror.

In this strategy game you take on the role of the Duke of Normandy as he attempts to overthrow the defending forces of Harold Godwinson. With nine different types of terrain, fog of war, multiplayer, 12 missions and nine varieties of infantry, cavalry and archers at your disposal, it definitely sounds like an epic mobile battle as you attempt to take the English crown.

HandyGames's press release sells the concept very nicely, proclaiming, "At the anniversary day, HandyGames presents AD 1066 – William the ConquerorA, the battle of Hastings to play along for your mobile. Command the Norman forces and go to war against the English heavy cavalry!"

Now, forgive me for being cynical, but isn't this like inviting the French to celebrate the anniversary of Agincourt? Or, indeed, asking the German-based developer to enjoy a game called The Battle of Berlin on November 22nd; running massive allied air raids against the German city in squadrons of Lancaster bombers?

To be fair, HandyGames also made Aces of the Luftwaffe, so maybe that evens things out a little. Admittedly, it was a long time ago (and there isn't much national animosity toward the Normans these days), but it seems a little tasteless offering it to the UK on the battle's anniversary, doesn't it?

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
